If you follow me on IG @fullhouseofroyals - you'd think I was a fitness fanatic and always have been.
However, if you have followed me over the years here or on other social media or if you know me IRL, you'd know that I am either highly committed to the point of annoying or completely disconnected, uninterested and not giving of two shits with regard to exercise, fit and healthy living and all that jazz.
I have had the benefit of genetics on my side for the majority of my life where when I heard "it's not fair, you're so skinny" it was really a true statement. It wasn't fair. I ate anything and everything whenever I wanted to. I did not workout and still fit in size 4-6 on the regular. That shit is just not right. Right?
Well, skinny was ok then because I was young and lazy (and clueless). Then I had kid #1 & #2...and I was all "what the f happen to my hips?!" So like a woman with a mission, I worked my tail (pun intended) to get in shape. It worked, of course. I put in the time and commitment to exercise every day, even if for a little bit until I was back to my fighting self. (at least my clothes fit again)
With 2 babies, I was on and off the workout wagon. I'd go a few months and then off. Again, no consistency. As they got older and I had a better handle of my schedule, I tried to make more of an effort. We had a home gym with the bench all the weights on it and a recumbent bike (which was my post baby savior) and that is all. I tried to go down there a few times a week for a little while but still not enough to be impactful.
Then, my life turned upside down for awhile. I started riding my mountain bike on trails outdoors by myself. It was very therapeutic. You have a lot of time to think and reflect when you are on a long bike ride and you get to appreciate things that you normally would take for granted. Like the bunnies crossing the path or the beautiful vibrant colors in the birds or the crazy sounds of the water in the bayou or the cicadas in the trees.
Finding solace on a bike was great but also very time consuming. Loading it up and getting all the gear up to the trail and back was a pretty big commitment out of any given day. Then one Summer in 2009 actually, I was sitting on the couch watching the IRONMAN championships in Hawaii on TV. You know how they cut away and do those inspirational stories about people overcoming huge obstacles and committing to doing something so massive for themselves, for a cause on behalf of someone else or just to prove that anyone CAN do whatever they set their minds to do? Yea, well...I was watching that and I can't remember what or who the story was but it inspired me. It motivated me. It MOVED me. Literally.
I jumped off the couch, laced up my shoes and took off running. There may have been an f bomb thrown in the mix to the tune of "f this, I have to do something". I am not a runner. The only time I ever ran was in high school gym when we had to run around the track. Or if someone was chasing me, duh. (Actually, I take that back. I ran before that. When my sister in law was getting wedding ready and we lived in the same apartment complex, she started training for a half marathon. I trained with her on the treadmill until I hurt myself. I didn't really "train"...I didn't even own running shoes...just tennis shoes...you know the ones. I didn't know anything about heartrates, pace, nutrition, stretching...NOTHING. (it was pre-internet so ignorance was easy) I can't even remember how far I ever ran...4 miles? 6?) Sorry, tangent much? Heehee
So I ran...I ran hard and fast and turned around and ran all the way in to my living room with fists in the air and a "HELL YEA!". It was Summer in Houston so probably also about 100 degrees outside. In the middle of the day. It was the worst time ever to try to take up running. But I did. Shoot, I didn't even know how far I went! Come to find out, I drove to my turning point and learned that I ran 2 miles roundtrip. WHAT?! Oh joy!
What followed was trials and tribulations of doing something to my body that my body was just not used to. I learned a lot about shoes, pace, heart rate, gadgets, body mechanics, plantar fasciitis, IT bands, stress fractures, going out too fast, too hard, too slow too much too soon. All that. I did 5ks, 10ks and eventually my first ever half marathon. With all the injuries and still being green to it all, it was an overall 'Meh' experience. I found that my knees were weak, my hips tight and my heart not very efficient. But I also found that there was a sweet spot to this running thing. The first mile or two were pure crap. Everything cracked and your head goes through an inventory of all the things that hurt. I was looking forward to the next light post or tree to be my stopping point and I always pushed just a little further. But then, when you finally find a groove and you are already on your way back home you realize, hey...I can totally keep going. I'm going around the block again! No, I'm going around the neighborhood again! And 5 miles turns into 8 or 9. Runners high. It's a real thing.
Prior to this run epiphany, we as a couple, had run through one round of P90X. I believe if I had continued with that while running, I would have eliminated a lot of my injuries. But that is nor here or there now. Just hind site talk. I learned through that experience that I CAN do pushups! A lot of them! My muscle tone was probably in peak form for my life at that time.
After the half marathon was done, I decided I needed to put my love for the bike to better use. My dad, an avid lifelong cyclist, has been telling me for YEARS that that is what I needed to put my efforts in. But of course, do we ever listen to our parents? Uh, yea. Exactly. He was also the one that told me I should run track in high school and I thought he was nuts. I shoulda listened. Sorry dad. :/
My dad had done many bike races and rides over the years including the MS150 a good 12-15 times. My hubby was nice enough to buy an official road bike and I started training as soon as the half was done. I experienced some brutal training rides in freezing winter and in the hills but no injuries other than IT band flare up here and there. I did the MS150 two years and to this day, love getting out on the bike. I try to do a minimum of 20 miles (much to my hubby's dismay...haha) and will sometimes try to ride with my dad and not get my ass handed to me. (He is tough to keep up with...his "casual" rides are hardcore workout rides for me!)
Fast forward to having two more babies. Nothing is more motivating than knowing the outcome of things from previous experience and knowing what to do to change results. So last two babies, I worked out AFTER as a remedy to get "back" to my old me. This time, I was going into the pregnancy being the best, fittest me so that getting back is not quite such a difficult journey.
My pregnancy fitness was on point. It was my first REAL training. I learned how to swim (I think I documented some of that here on this blog!), I started doing yoga regularly and also added spin classes and aerial fabric and conditioning classes too. Baby #3 came and went and my body snapped back like a rubberband. It was fantastic! And then...I got busy being a working mom of 3 and I slipped again. Until I found out I was pregnant with #4. New goal! I got back on the same type routines and again, boom, that kid popped out and was back to my old self in no time flat.
I ran with them, pulled them on the bike and did some spot workouts at home here and there but again...nothing to keep me committed.
Last year, I figured my goal oriented nature was the only way to keep me on track. Sign up for things, commit to train, show up and do it. I've documented my whole trial "half ironman training" experience on this blog too. Feel free to peruse at your leisure. ;)
I worked my butt off for a good chunk of the year. I ran, swam and biked. I hot yoga'd here and there and I lost my ass. Literally. All the cardio makes all the curves disappear on me. I did several sprint tris and then school happened. My schedule blew up and getting the workouts in was getting harder and harder. So, I stopped trying. Rather than miss a few here and there, I chunked the whole program because I didn't want to "half ass" it. Makes sense. No.
So my hubby got me going again Jan 1, 2016. Motivated me to get my ass in gear...I even had a hashtag for it. #newyeargetmyassingear (look it up, it's true!) I committed to doing SOMETHING every day. Not for a race day. Not for a due date. Not for a milestone birthday. Not for a weight number. Not for a size. Not even for a trip. Although having one as a reward is totally ok. :)
The new goal was to do something for ME. To set an example for my kids. To be healthy for my family. To motivate myself and others that could be in the same predicament. To prove that everyone has the same number of hours in the day and no matter how tight, you CAN make SOMETHING happen each day to make you feel better. Because every workout makes you feel better.
So now I am in month 7 of this #newyeargetyourassingear movement. SEVEN. Longer than pregnancy fitness time. Longer than post pregnancy fitness time. Longer than training for a full freaking ironman if you think on that. And I can say proudly that I have done SOMETHING 95% of those 7 months. Check my insta...haha. I keep myself accountable there.
Here's the thing I did this year that I hadn't done in the past (for very long anyway) - I started lifting weights. Consistently and often and actually increasing the weight too! I've had gym stints in the past but not like this.
I decided to use all the machines in the office gym and learn all the things that they can do. I'm stronger for it. Not skinny. My ass is semi gone but the part that has stayed is hard. Lol. You'll be able to bounce a quarter off that baby soon! Ha!
I am slowly becoming less timid about going to the big gym and trying a machine there. It can be really intimidating sometimes...especially if they don't have a little picture by them explaining how they work. Lol! I'm all about instructions, man.
I am now officially addicted. I look forward to going to the gym and have a hard time leaving because I want to try "one more" exercise. Times 3 rounds of 15 reps. Haha. I still run but my lack of steady training and heat/humidity of the summer has affected my pace which in turn affects my ego. Just keeping it real. I like to go fast. And when I can't, it pisses me off. So I go further instead. Slow and steady, I guess.
Here's a revelation: 7 months of weight training, some yoga, cycling and running and no injuries. Hmm. Maybe there is something to that whole moderation is king thing. (Remember the half marathon earlier this year? How I was all gun ho and then hurt myself? Well here's the refresher link and also here)
So now what? Staying on the steady train my friends. I am seeing big results in the way my body looks and I love the way I feel and I am not following some crazy training schedule or diet plan to do it (moderation and smart choices). My friend wants me to do a tri with her in a few weeks but I haven't been in the pool in a long while. I think I may have forgotten how to swim! I may give it a go, we'll see. I also have some pilates classes lined up, more bike ride dates with the hubby (yay) and I think I may get back to doing the aerial yoga classes again too. My other friend wants to do a destination race in Utah early next year and the triathlon in Cuba is also very tempting. I just don't know if I want the training schedules. Haha. Now that my muscles are stronger, running longer and harder may be easier and will keep me injury free. I will take that all into consideration soon.
In the mean time, we are going to be converting a double garage to a home gym later this year that I am really excited about planning and designing! It will be great to have a nice space to go to without leaving the house (or tripping over cars and My Little Ponies - haha)
So although fitness and I go way back and our relationship has been through ups and downs, it is finally this year that we've gotten to better understand one another and bond. I look forward to building this relationship and sharing it with my family and friends (including you!).

2nd qtr 2016 fitness goals defined
I've been noodling about this since my last post. Before the days and month get away from me, I know I need to be a little more decisive about my goal. The sooner I do that, the sooner I can also define a reward! Ha!
I decided to take dreaded pics of myself so that I can SEE the areas that I want to focus on and target to change. I've mentioned (on IG @fullhouseofroyals) my cellulite that has creeped onto the outside of my thighs (and my butt too) and I just cannot. CANNOT. DEAL. Ugh. What is this gross thing? Actually, I know what it is. The bigger question is WHYYYY???? What horrible punishment for slacking off!
In any event, I am aware that there is no potion, lotion, scrub or cream that will buff it away. I know that burning the fat layer and building the muscle underneath is the only way. How's that for getting to the point? I saved you oodles of time googling and watching ridiculous long youtube videos explaining the same in only two sentences. You're welcome.
The pictures don't lie. And no, you won't be seeing them. I can barely look at them. The true test was putting on that cute bikini that I totally rocked just last Summer. WHAT. IN. THE. HELL??? It's like a completely different bottom half of my body! So, there is my answer. Boom.
The goal: Eradicate said cellulite and get a tight, smooth butt. I don't think a quarter is enough though. 13 weeks? Eh. I have looked at before and after "body transformation" photos. It can be done (unless those pics have been photoshopped to high heaven). I will never know unless I stop, drop and squat. A lot.
The plan: Not sure yet. I will research this and find one but in the meantime, I will make sure to find glute/leg workouts on pinterest or youtube. I have an office gym with a pretty good amount of equipment that I will have to teach myself to work with, a membership at a great gym that has every machine imaginable and I will continue to attend my Kickbox class, cycling and running for cardio (fat burning).
The reward: The beach! Courtesy of the hubby. When we had this conversation and I showed him the pics and blew them up. Oh, yes I did. Yikes. I said "no denying, honey...THAT has GOT TO GO" So, before you wonder why I am insisting to go to the gym again, go for a late run or start randomly squatting before jumping in the shower, you know it's because of THAT. He suggested a trip to the beach as a reward. I am not about to turn that down and I am not about to take THIS out in a bikini anytime soon so....it's set.
Bonus: For April, I started a 30 day arm challenge I saw on Instagram put on by Fitness Magazine. I'm 4 days in and I already know it's going to be tougher than I thought. I'll also be incorporating abs heavily into the mix and watching my nutritional intake take too. So no worries, I won't be neglecting the rest of my body. :)
Details to follow! Come back and if you follow along and my booty starts making obvious improvements, I would consider posting my very own before and after. But only then.
Happy Glutes Day! I mean, Tuesday! ;)

Light Me Up
My son is not a fan of me running at night. He always makes certain I'm wearing light colored clothing and I've got a full charge on my phone. Since it seems this is the most available time for me to get my runs in, I thought I'd find some gadgets to make my runs safer by being more visible.
Behold my shoe lights!
My son gave me an approving nod. I can't say I felt safer per se, since the majority of my runs are on sidewalks, but I did find it to garner more attention from dog walkers and every passing car rather than going under the radar as is norm.
Good thing I didn't use the blinking feature! Can you say...obnoxious?
Happy workout edition of #TuesdayShoesday !

P.S. I ran! First run since ankle injury!

Monday Motivation. #Chachacha
Who else did a little dance when they read this?
Don't let those Super Bowl party foods be your disaster...get back at it!
Go get that Monday and DO NOT skip the workout! :)
Valerie
Funny unrelated anecdote: February is my birthday month and I usually celebrate in some form or another ALL month (because I can! haha) but now that I share the month with my youngest daughter, I've had to relinquish the first couple of weeks to her. (phfft, kids!) Anyway, I mentioned to my hubby this weekend about my birthday plans and she (quickly and loudly) interjects "you mean MYYYYY birthday????" Seriously, kid? Her birthday was LAST week! How quickly they catch on to the birthday month celebration concept. Conversation was tabled, obviously. She wins. :)

Holding out, staying positive
What else can you do? On my last update here, I mentioned my ridiculous ankle/foot injury and how it's sidelined my running and the goals that are attached to that (i.e Woodlands Half Marathon that I had JUST registered for! $$ :/ ). I also mentioned how I was going to keep on moving and hope that it will heal enough for me to at the very least, complete it.
I haven't waivered on that. I have been upbeat and positive and made a heck of a lot of lemonade this last couple of weeks. I have modified P90X video workouts and I have become reacquainted with my road bike, Blu, after many months of separation. So much so, that I will probably be ready for the MS 150 in April if I keep it up! I have found that much like my injury a little over a year ago (fibular stress fracture, same leg), the best and really only workout that can keep me in check cardiovascularly and still build leg muscle is by riding my bike. No pain to the leg then, or the ankle and foot now. The trickiest part is clipping out which concerns me (a little) about riding outdoors versus off the safety of my indoor trainer.
I will continue doing that until I can walk normally without flinching. It seems there is still pain to apply weight on the foot which is bitterly frustrating but I know I have to patient. Sigh.
I said I would see a doctor. Ummm...yea, I don't wanna. :P BUT, I did take a pause from typing this to visit the doctor's website. I found this and it confirms that I can't do much about it but rest it. Yes, it's self-diagnosis. No, I don't recommend it.
So carry on I say...find something to make today better than yesterday. Be grateful for every second.
Hasta la proxima,
V.

Hello? It's me.
I was wondering if after all these months you'd like to read
'bout how I fell off the workout wagon
They say that rest's supposed to be good for ya
But it made me weak
'bout how I fell off the workout wagon
They say that rest's supposed to be good for ya
But it made me weak
Hello, can you relate
I'm at work dreaming about who I used to be
last Summer when I trained for hours
I've forgotten how strong it felt before the school fell at my feet
I'm at work dreaming about who I used to be
last Summer when I trained for hours
I've forgotten how strong it felt before the school fell at my feet
There's such a difference between us (me then and now)
And a million swim/bike/run miles
And a million swim/bike/run miles
Anywho. I'm not going to go on with that...you get the gist. I unintentionally broke up with my training because life took pole position. It was crazy there for awhile but then it wasn't.
I had many opportunities to kick it back up in November and December. However, the Holidays and Travel made a pretty good EXCUSE (that is totally what it is) to push the workouts aside. Honestly, I just didn't feel like it. There. I said it. I was not motivated and I could care 3 Fs about suiting up and working out or making it a priority. I had a million other things on my plate and my mind and body didn't crave it.
I ran exactly ONCE each month since I last posted here. LITERALLY. One 4 miler in September, one 4 miler in October and one 5 miler in November...I didn't even bother with being consistent in December (although I planned on running in Central Park on our trip, but didn't).
We returned from our NYC Christmas trip on December 30th. I had mentioned maybe once or twice to the hubby that I felt the time was coming for me to get back up on the saddle. I really like being healthy, fit and tone. I like when my clothes fit right...it makes playing dress up on dates nights or GNO that much more enjoyable. While packing for NYC, I made the realization that some things were fitting a little snugger than I prefer. Or I just didn't like how I looked in one outfit or another. Ugh. Too many indulgent dinners and desserts over the holidays! Damn you NEW YORK CITY for having amazing food!!
I also made it very clear to my husband that although I KNEW these things, I also did not want to DO anything about it. Motivation: zilch. I may have posted as such on FB at some point and friends came out in droves offering to run with me. At 5 am. Uuuuuuuugggghhhh. Nooooooo..... No thank you.
But my amazing hubby knew that I could never turn him down. He knew that if HE offered to go for a run with me, I would never turn him down. Suddenly, on the COLD, early morning of January 1st, the guy who hates being cold and really thinks running is super boring, dragged me out of my warm bed and took me to Memorial Park for a one loop run (3 miles).
I really wanted to punch him. Hello? Who are you?
But I didn't. We ran. I was stiff. I was cold. I was miserable. But I was there.
We started off slow and the sad, sad realization that the great pace I had achieved over the Summer was LONG GONE. Boooohoooo. I was so slow. And then, my hubby turned motivational coach and number one cheerleader says...."let's try changing it up....let's run real fast then slow down or walk" Huh? Hello? Who are you again? So after the boring mundane first mile, we ran a sprint for about a minute and a half. We jogged for a bit and did it again. Over and over and before we knew it, we were done! And, definitely not cold anymore. It was exhilarating and also exhausting. I was glad to be done and to go back to my warm home.
The next day, Coach V (as I started calling him), got me to go on another run. This time in our neighborhood but to the nearby track. We did the same thing. Run a loop and half, jog a loop and half. It was awesome!
Half a mile from the house, I was looking ahead to some gravel and didn't see the pipe sticking out of the ground when I STEPPED on it. My ankle completely folded over and down I went hands first into the gravel I was eyeing! OUCH!
I got up and hobbled for a bit and finished my run (very achy). It hurt for a bit but I "walked it off". The next day Coach V set up a workout at home for us. Afterwards we went for a short walk and realized it felt better to jog little steps than it did to walk. The day after that, he had another workout for me and after I went for a short/slow jog with my son (2 miles).
I worked out for a consecutive 7 days. Hubby got really busy at work again and couldn't coach me daily but he had given me the best gift ever. My motivation! He pushed me and got me going again. I took a day off when I had a crazy carpool, work late at night from home while hubby worked til midnight kind of day. That's pretty much it. I have been pretty diligent about doing SOMETHING. Yay me.
Today is January 28th. I have logged 56.1 miles in the month of January. WHAT?! Yes. That is crazy.
Want to hear crazier? Yea, on Houston Marathon day, over a week ago, I decided to go out for my longest run, a quarter marathon! I could do it, I was sure of it. I had so many friends running the full and half that day and the weather was AWESOME that I felt super inspired to get out there. And I did just that. I ran a new route and lost track of my distance from home. By the time I turned around, I made it home at 8 miles! OMG. It wasn't super fast but it was fantastic. I felt great and could have gone further.
That night, my elite marathon running friend threw a "post-marathon" party. Unbeknownst to me, in attendance were all her running friends. (Why did she invite me?!) This group is a hardcore running group. How hardcore? Houston was my friend's 42nd marathon. FORTY SECOND. Because she is 42, she said. Duh. Haha.
This year, she will have run Boston, 5 years in a row. She is running New York in the Fall (which is harder to qualify for than Boston, by the way) and is running the Woodlands Marathon in about 6 weeks. Why am I telling you all of this? Well, because I left that party super inspired and motivated and the idea that I actually COULD run a half marathon (Woodlands) in 6 weeks. I mean, I just ran 8...how hard can another 5 be? Right?
I signed up. I ran several times last week plus joined hubby on his P90X quest that he started from Day 1 last week (he's on week 2 and still going strong). My friend offered to coach me on my endeavor, even offered to run with me on my long run on Sunday. She is THAT nice.
We met at 7am at Memorial Park. She had 5 under her belt before we met. We ran the loop with no issue and left the park. At mile 5, the ankle decided to hurt. WHAT? I felt that turning around would be the best idea. About a tenth of a mile later, I couldn't run anymore. Another tenth and I could barely walk. Putting pressure on my foot was incredibly painful.
It appears that ankle roll from January 2nd had done more damage than I realized. And all the running I have done probably exasperated the situation. I have iced, taped and rested the thing and I am yet not able to walk normally. :(
I am waiting another few days before I see a doctor but I know what they'll say. Stay off of it. Rest. I either have a strained ligament or fractured a baby bone in my foot. Whatever the diagnosis, the treatment will be the same. I am SURE. But I will confirm it next week.
So where does that put my half marathon? Not sure. It's 5 weeks away so it's not looking good but I will remain positive and hopeful. Whatever the case, I am not letting it hamper my motivation.
I rode my bike on a trainer last night for an hour! My ankle/foot does not hurt at all when I do that! I'll keep joining hubby with his workouts and modifying as necessary. I have my fingers crossed that I will be well enough to run it, shoot at this point, I would be happy to WALK it!! I will be sure to come back and post an update on that and to keep coming out here more often. There are duathlons, triathlons and the dreaded first day back in the pool that I need to still experience and tell you all about. I bet you can't wait! Haha.
Sorry this post was so long, it's been awhile! I've missed you! :)
I'm updating my daily workouts and motivations on my new insta account: @FullHouseofRoyals (because my friends and family don't want to hear about my workouts! haha) Come check it out for inspiration, motivation, healthy recipes, smoothie idea and quirky day in the life of pics. I promise, all positive!! :)
Happy Thursday and I'll leave you with this:
Goodbye. ;)

Post of Shame
What can I say? It's Summer's fault?
Meh.
Last I checked, my most recent update on this blog was sometime in June. Over two months have passed and I swear it happened with a blink of an eye. I stayed on track most of that time even though I laxed on my updates. I figured that as long as I continued with my faux-training plan, I was still building my base and coming here every week was okay to skip out on because with limited time, something had to give. Here's a run down of what did and didn't happen and where I am now.
I started this "super simple 70.3 Ironman training plan" immediately following the 4th of July weekend. Initially, my thought was that starting at that time would get me ready for Ironman 70.3 Miami late October. I really liked the swim and run courses on this and the idea that my family could be there along with my hometown family and friends seemed like icing. My hubby was on board and even considered for a hot minute that maybe he could train with me and DO. IT. TOO. (gasp...too many more thoughts and words about this...it totally would deserve its own post on what all happened there). I had browsed through the training weeks in this plan and I thought "hmm, totally doable". Of course, I was only concerned with the physical aspects of "doing" it. I cringed a little at the later weeks of the plan as there never seems to be a true recovery time and the brick workouts appeared to be very intense but nonetheless, I was pretty confident in my ability to get it done.
What I put in the back drawer of my brain was the schedule. The changes in the schedule that were fast approaching, specifically. Week after week, I swam, ran and biked as prescribed. I bricked early in the morning and squeezed my long rides on Fridays and runs on Sundays. In the mean time, I looked into the logistics of Miami. Travel with or without kids? Bike transport? The schedule, like an internet pop-up, came into the frame and it reminded me "oh yea, school will be in session. And soccer. And golf" Uh-oh.
I had a Plan B in my back pocket if I did in fact continue on this journey without obstacles...Ironman70.3 Austin. Closer to home and a week or two later than the first race, Austin was the initial obvious choice for a first 70.3. The thing is, I read sooo many reviews about the swim and bike that just seemed awful. Chip and seal sucks and swimming in a plant lake leaves much to be desired in the scenery department. The topper on this one is that the run is 3 loops. UGH. I hate loops!! Clearly, this is not where I wanted my first (and quite possibly last) run at 70.3 to be.
Because of all theseexcuses reasons, Austin was in pencil. I wasn't about to pull the trigger on registering until later on in training when I knew I felt strong and ready. (Miami has since sold out)
I managed 6 weeks of training. Even on a mini vacation getaway, I managed long runs and squeezed bikes and swims before and after travel. On that sixth week, swims were tough because I just couldn't get to the pool. And then, we went on another getaway. There was lap-length pool there but getting up early to swim before the vacationers came in was TOUGH. I succumbed to vacation mode. I needed it really and I was guilt free about it. I managed to even run 9 miles on our time away. My husband was so impressed. I ran down the hill from the hotel, under and across the freeway to the nearby trail and back finishing up that treacherous hill to get to my shower, breakfast and pool. Beast mode!
I was ready to conquer week 7 when I got back home. Except that back to school, work deadlines and a travelling husband also happened that week. I wore a cape on week 7, really. I did it all. Everything you could possibly imagine that needed to get done, I did. Except swim, bike and run.
School started, new schedules at 3 different schools and a SUPER busy entrepreneur husband that was cooking up big deals and was totally in the "zone" and me...in the busiest time of year for a corporate tax person.
Y'all. I'm motivated and at times crazy about getting what I need to get done, done. My priorities are not skewed, however. My family always comes first. I thought that missing all my workouts was going to really mess with my head, emotions and body very quickly. I thought I was going to turn into a raving lunatic craving and needing to "escape" the chaos for a run. I am happy to say that I was wrong.
I feel pretty freakin' fantastic (and accomplished) to get all the work done at the office (at whatever hour necessary), support my hubby's endeavours all the while being a supermom who treks across town for soccer practices, carpools, cooks, tutors, launders and still has time to play princess, kick a ball and ride tricycles with the littles and doesn't tire of the thousands of "moms" I hear on the daily. My heart is full, I am so very grateful and I am ok with not sleeping much. So far.
I have not had a workout (the 9 mile run) since August 16th. Technically and in reality, that is not THAT long. But with my history, that could snowball into what I am feeling right now "I feel great, I am never getting up at 5 for a workout again!!" and then soon after, I feel awful and starting again is much like dragging my 3 year old to her new PK3 class, lots of tears and whining is involved. Ahem.
So what's the plan, you say? How do I stay ahead of this unpreventable situation that is looming given your time constraints, you say? Well...I'm either hiring a tutor, housekeeper (that cooks) and putting my babysitter on the weekly payroll, or quitting work.
Bahahahaha. Dream on, sister. I don't know is the answer. Sleep even less? Honestly, I don't know. I have been creative before but usually much more motivated than I am right now. Maybe another week will get me itching and motivated. Maybe a short run on this upcoming free and clear (so far) holiday weekend will spark the motivation. Because that post run feeling is SO AWESOME. Again, I don't know.
I hope all of you that still come out here looking for my updates are staying active and keeping with your programs. My workout buddy has not quit on me (yet)...she still texts and emails in hopes that one day I WILL join her at the pool at 6 or for the 5:30am Define Rev class. She is still hoping that I agree to do the TowneLake Labor Day Tri with her but I just don't feel like doing it because I know I'd be beating myself up during the entire swim, bike and run about how weak, tired I feel and what a miserable experience it is. Not being prepared will do that to you. I want Tri's to be FUN! The reality is that a 3 week hiatus will make it not fun for me...pretty sure.
In any event, I will keep you all posted when I figure this out because you know what? If I do, I will most certainly want to SHARE!! Lol!
Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend everyone and TGIF!!
Valerie :)

Let Me Be Your Case Study
You know those people who come to you for advice and after you've given it, they do something completely different? Yea, that was me. To my own advice!
I decided to ignore the "conversioning" tips I was so kind to provide on my prior post on lessening the pain of getting that early morning workout in. It wasn't really on purpose or for the sake of this post but since it turned out the way that it did, I decided to make me an example of what NOT to do. You're welcome.
I didn't let Monday be a rest day because I kept hearing "Never Skip Mondays" in my head. Despite that of course, that only means if you didn't do a dang thing for the last 7 week days, but nonetheless, I did something. I pulled a couple of workouts from the Nike Training Club app and then jumped on my trainer for a heart pumping, sweatfest half hour.
I got in bed knowing that I REALLY needed to get a swim in early in the week. But also knowing that I REALLY didn't wanna (anti-psyching myself out, rule one broken). I also got in bed not knowing where in the heck my swimsuit was (hamper?, workout drawer?, dryer? swimsuit drawer?). Meaning, I have already broke the first two rules of morning get yo butt up readiness! No clue where your gear is? C'mon, lady! I told hubby, "meh, I'll figure it out in the morning" and he teased "I'll get up and run with you" (knowing this will get me off the swimming hook) and within 30 seconds I went from happiness to oh, crap he's totally pulling my leg. :/
I woke up with the alarm and did text my buddy to make sure SHE was getting up for HER swim. Ahem. I had zero motivation to get up and snoozed away. Apparently, she felt the same way because she didn't respond for another hour! Ha! So, the buddy system too, failed.
The whole morning was set in motion in cuckoo mode. Because now, along with all the other morning rush must do's, I have to play catch up and be prepared for the opportunity of a Tuesday workout. Pack a breakfast, lunch and a workout bag (putting together all the gear!) cause...you never know!
So, all this to say: "Do as I say, not as I do!" The tips work, y'all!
Tomorrow: SWIM!! For real.
Have a good one!

Night to Morning Conversioning
I think I may have just made up a word.
One of the hardest things about trying to squeeze in all these workouts is the realization that there is no other way to get it done but sacrificing sleep and converting to the *dreadful* morning person. If I were a "go to bed at a decent hour gal", it probably wouldn't be so difficult. But the thing of it is, I stay up late. And like it. Giving that up will be the toughest.
My buddy has figured this out long before I, so getting her morning texts are very VERY helpful. It's good to know I'm not the only one waking up at an unGodly hour to go WORKOUT? I am the first to get up (or never go to bed) when there's travel involved. But the energy required to exercise at that time is sometimes nonexistent. Nor the motivation.

I am the first to get up (or never go to bed) when there's travel involved. But the energy required to exercise at that time is sometimes nonexistent. Nor the motivation.
As a night owl, I'm reluctant to admit that it's getting easier. At least I can say that now, since today's early class was cancelled. My bedtime is slowly rolling back to mid Jimmy Fallon to early Seth Myers range. Ha! My binge watching of House of Cards with hubby is suffering though. I fall asleep and then wake up when something big has happened and I feel we have to watch the episode again. To be fair, he falls asleep too so it's a do over for both of us! Lol.
I started with one weekly early class. Now, I am early rising 3 to 4 times a week!! (WHAT?!)
A few things that seem to help this painful transition:
1 - Psyche yourself up the night before
Usually after one really good workout, start thinking of the next. Think about how "tomorrow morning" you will get the big run, swim or whatever done and off the list. Think about how much stronger you are after each workout. All this is necessary because you will need to remind yourself of this when the alarm goes off at 4:30 and you snooze and ask yourself "whyyyyyyyyy???"
2 - Get yo stuff together
Set your clothes out. Your gym bag, water bottle, swim bag, bike shoes/bike by the door, whatever gear you need...have it ready to go. This minimizes the time fumbling around in the morning when your eyes are still stuck together which in turn means, more time in bed. See? Win-win! I can get from bed to driver's seat in about 15 minutes. (I can and have but doesn't necessarily mean I DO each time...work in progess, k?)
3 - Fuel Up
I'm not saying you need a full breakfast but you certainly need a lil something in the tank to get you moving. I've tried with and without coffee and maybe half a banana. It CAN be done with an empty stomach or without caffeine but for ME, it was one less thing I can blame my sluggishness too. It's a mind game, I tell ya. If I had even half a cup of joe, it makes me happy and satisfied and ready to go. Whether or not the caffeine actually works is uncertain. I'm thinking adrenaline takes over so really, whatever it takes to get you to the starting block is good enough.
4 - Pound the Alarm!
I have a motivational title to my workout alarm. It's something to the tune of: "GET YOUR ASS UP!" followed by a string of workout and tropical destination type emojis. Does it help? Not really, but it's the isolated alarm for that purpose that gives it the sense of being special. I can't let it down. Having the caps and bad word makes it feel like a mean personal trainer yelling at me. Not really, but just go with it. Extra tip, you are a habitual snoozer to the point that you sleep through your entire workout session time, set your phone on the other side of the room (so annoying) but even more effective, put it on your non-early rising husband's night stand. He will be SURE you get your ass up and out of the house in a hurry! (So I hear....ha!)
5 - Buddy System - Real or Virtual
This is by far, the most helpful of things. If I committed to meet someone for a run before dawn, I would NEVER leave them hanging or sacrifice their workout for my lack of motivation. I WILL BE THERE. The same goes for our cycling class or meeting for group runs. On the days when you have to go at it alone, however, draw on the support of the virtual buddy. These are people that are in your same boat...living the same struggle of trying to fit it ALL in with limited time and opportunity. Your peoples, your tribe. They scratch your back and you scratch theirs...text them when the alarm goes off, wake them up, give them the pep talk when they are just in a funk and don't wanna...and likely, they will do the same for you. You will both like each other better later in the day when your workouts are complete! Ha! (experience speaking!)
What has helped me SO much with this transition is the feeling of getting to work after a good workout, getting kids ready and out the door, carpooling and traffic, knowing that it. is. done! You can actually look forward to working the rest of the day and going about your evening duties (carpool/taxi/dinner/homework/family time) without the stress of having to find the time to leave all that and squeeze a workout in.
It's so gratifying that I don't mind nodding off a little earlier than usual.
Happy Monday all!

Mid Week Motivation - Don't Quit!
Thoughts of the race and some of the difficulty I experience allowed self doubt to creep in. I've manage to swing out of it by getting a daily workout in. This morning's was the toughest. Getting up early for a pool swim wasn't all that fun of a notion. I always feel more enthusiastic about my morning workouts the night before...the not so fun notion feeling was dread by morning when my virtual workout buddy texted and the alarm went off soon after. Ugh. I procrastinated getting up. I procrastinated getting ready. I procrastinated leaving the house. I even wondered "am I really ever going to get where I envision?" "is this a realistic goal?" "should I just quit the whole thing and go back to bed?" I knew the answers to all the questions. I am a positive, strong minded person so of course, I knew that was just the fear of failure creeping in to rattle me a bit and I just had to kick it to the curb.
I procrastinated getting out the car at the gym. But I did. I found a lane, set up and got in to that cold water. I didn't procrastinate to start though. I had a workout to follow and off I went. Y'all it was SO good. So very good that I was sad it was over. WHAT? Yes, I was sad it was over. My breathing was rhythmic the drills were feeling effective and I was imagining swimming in a lake for a long distance and how that would go. Progress! I realized that I had procrastinated over a half an hour of my workout away where I could have actually finished all 2300M had I started on time. Shame on me but yay me for showing up and getting some of it done. 1650M! One mile swim before 6:45am and lots of positive vibes and hope coming out of the pool. I am looking forward to my next swim!Sooooo....here it is. It's hard and it sucks at times but gosh the redemption of success when you follow through is SO worth it! It's that carrot dangling out there that lets you touch it every once in a while in hopes you can grab it. Keep reaching, you'll get there!
Go out there and get moving! Happy hump day!

You Have 7 Days, Make Them Count
So did I?
I've mentioned before how I love to write it down as a to-do and cross it off or make notations (iphone calendar & notes just don't cut it for me). Well, I have a sweet new calendar that I unwrapped and am trying really hard to not make it look messy with all the switcheroos. I think though that seeing this pack of pages over the course of time with all my doodles, scratch-outs and notes will be quite telling of my training journey.
Thank you Corey!! :)
3/2 Mon 1:15 bike seated hills - I forgot what the workout was...just remembered required time. I got on late at night after all the kids were in bed and gave it a go. I did some climbs, seated and standing, sprints and 1 leg drills...I figured it was all-encompassing. Went 1:17 and only 11 miles? Turns out the speed sensor was not properly aligned for the first half hour. Sigh. Garmin is still dead so no HRM. I decided on a whim to also casually join in yet another yoga challenge: #JourneytoHandstand because, who doesn't want to master a handstand? I've gotten to the point where I could and then let it all go. It's all core so I thought if I tried this, I would be working muscles I need anyway. I did 3 days worth of the challenge and the last, hand standing for a minute, though supported by the wall, was tough! My shoulders were screaming! Extra time in for the photo ops too. :)
#JourneytoHandstand
After dinner, baths, cleanup and getting everyone to bed, I pull out some small weights and did a series of arm exercises followed by tabata burpees, the yoga challenge and even foam rolled by achy glutes and hammies. Yay!
Not so yay...I was done with all this by midnight which is precisely the time the baby decided to wake up. Cranky. He fell quickly back asleep but I should have known it was a preface to what was to come...he was up at 4am ready to rumble. I brought him to bed in hopes he'd cuddle and fall back asleep but instead, he treated me and my bed like a trampoline and was WIDE AWAKE and wanting to play until about 5:30. When the alarm went off. :/ That's two nights of interrupted rest in a row. Sleep deprived? Uh yea. Let's see how this affects the rest of the week shall we?
3/4 Wed 1st Brick 1:10 bike Z3 Aero/30m run - Hubby's back! Thankfully that means no cooking or working out at near midnight. Got a good 15 miles in on the allotted time and 3 miles on the run. Not fast but I spent the first mile fidgeting with apps and music, good negative split though. He brought home dinner. :)
3/5 Thurs 1200M swim (sets of 100) - Well, made it to pool about 5:45am, Masters class had started (I forgot TH was class day). Rather than interrupt to join a lane when I knew I'd be leaving quickly, I jumped in the other pool. I had been told that it was 25Y and I *thought* (ugh) the wko was 900M. I was thinking I'd swim 1300Y and it should cover me. I wanted to make the 6:30a Hot Yoga class (since hubby is back and I'm so tight and sore everywhere) so rushed through it and asked the instructor on the way out what the length of pool I was swimming in was just to be sure. It is 17 meters, long...or short. Ahhh!!! No wonder it seemed easy. Ugh. So, after doing my math homework
I learned that my 52 lengths were worth only 884M. BOO, so I'm 266M short for the week but got a great yoga class in that included some fun inversions and arm balances! Got to check off the yoga challenge to boot. Whoohoo!
UPDATE!! - The instructor was wrong! Signs are now posted...the "short pool" is 20M! So, I swam 1040M so I went OVER 140M...haha!! (Yes, I am updating this almost 2 months later...feeling redeemed!) :)
3/6 Fri Rest - I really could use it but I rather "rest" on family days (weekends). I have another brick Sunday so running while everyone is in school/work is optimal. But, having the kids in school on a sorta half day of work means me and the hubs can get some one on one time if he doesn't have any meetings or anything pressing at work. I packed my workout bag and brought it to work because THE SUN IS OUT ALL DAY TODAY (albeit bringing 30 degree colder weather with it)! If I can meet all my deadlines at work, get a quick loop at the park on the way home, I'll still get to hang with my babe with time to spare. The sun is "forecasted" to hide tomorrow for the rest of the weekend so...the day must be seized!
Finding my sporty Revo shades in hubby's car made up for losing my earbuds on the walk to the car from my office. It was a gorgeous day, no music necessary and got date time in too. Win win win! :)
3/7 Sat Fast 5k - "Rest" day
3/8 Sun 2nd Brick Swim 45m (250wu 5x100 30' 150cd) Bike 45m (Z2-3 85-100rpm). - big fat workout fail today. Wet, dreary day filled with awful food and adjusting to daylight savings on a sleep deprived week was not the best formula to getting it done today. Never got a chance to leave for the pool, though I didn't try too hard. Had a fun day running around with the family so it's still a win. No regrets. :)
So, I almost made it. I was short 260ish OVER 140 meters but short an hour and a half brick workout, though I added a good hour of hot yoga and handstand work throughout the week.
Next week, make up the missed workouts plus the "plan" and a hot yoga class all while hubby travels. AGAIN.
Happy Monday all! Make your days count!
Valerie
P.S. - I was all packed up for the gym this (Monday) morning hoping get A) 8ish miles on TM B) 1200M Swim C) 8ish miles + 1200M Swim. Alas, rainy morning & daylight savings got me again (and hubby binge watching House of Cards into the wee hours didn't help). Monday morning workout scrapped but all packed up to hit the gym at some point!

1st Recovery week round up
I guess recovery week means lesser effort rather than fewer workouts. I straddled the line between the two this week tweaking away as is the norm. No travel for hubby this week but yucky cold and wet weather coupled with evening commitments made for another week of switcharoos. I won't bore you with the details but here's the round up depicting the prescribed plan in bold and what actually went down following.
Monday - Day 15 - Rest - 1 hour, PowerOne Cycling class (indoor bike on trainer)
Tuesday - Day 16 - 1:30 Bike easy - Rest since I did hard class yesterday (and have birthday brownie/ice cream dessert) :)
Wednesday - Day 17 - Rest or swim 900M - 1000M swim (10min time trial w/o warmup: 300M, 100k, 100p, 10min time trial warmed up: 400M, 100k)
Thursday - Day 18 - 1:15 Bike easy - thought I'd wake up early and knock this out but sleep felt too good. A little regretful since fitting in for the rest of the week will be tough. Birthday happy hour will make early Friday workout a little more difficult too.
Friday - Day 19 - Rest - Um, yea...I swear they put everclear in those margaritas. Rest it is.
Saturday - Day 20 30 min Swim, 850M - Feeling guilty for all the rest days, pulled the trainer in and did Thursday's workout. About 14 miles...I started with easy effort and then pulled out all the stops in the last half hour because...me.
Sunday - Day 21 1:30 Run Z1-3 - I was hoping to leave the house early and get the "or swim" from Wednesday in before the long run. I forgot how toddlers wake up at the crack of dawn full of energy. Hubby got my distress signal late morning (he's so awesome) and took the whole crew out so that mom can have a "free" day. No nails, shopping or massage but rather a solid 2 hours of putting my house back in order from 2 littles (I'm looking at you, Mateo aka Monster-teo) transporting random household items to all the places they don't belong. A good solid 20 minutes were spent looking for remotes, not even joking. Is it in the trash? (dig through trash) Did he put it in the snack drawer? (dig through drawer and reorganize the mess) What about the shoe basket? Oh, no...is it in the washing machine? High cardio, super fast hide and seek and put stuff back before I lose time to run counts for a workout right?
All this, followed by the prescribed hour and a half run. A little over 9 miles that I couldn't keep below Z4 because that would be walking? How is that possible? Anyway, it was a non issue because Garmin went dead before I made 3 miles. Pace was fairly slow so I know I didn't over do it and given it was the longest run since my injury, I'm feeling pretty good. Success!!
So how'd I measure up? Well, I didn't do the extra swim and never made it around to Yoga and the foam roll effort really was pathetic. But all the other stuff was done!
Coming up this week are brick workouts (8 total workouts +- 6-7 hours), crappy weather (cold, wet and dreary) and a travelling hubby. Great recipe for getting it done dontcha think?
Here we go!
Happy Monday all!

Switch it In, Switch it Out
...to the tune of "Shake it Off" by Taylor Swift. Can you hear it?
Anyway, I don't know how to juggle balls. I've tried over the years to throw them up and attempt this maneuver that seems simple enough but end up smacking myself in the face or throwing a ball across the room. Perhaps it's my lack of coordination. I tend to trip and hit sharp edges and corners on tight turns too. Luckily for me, lack of coordination does not equate to lack of flexibility...both literally and metaphorically.
You see, my life is in a state where "balls" are always in the air. I work best under a structured, and somewhat routine based environment, however, curve balls cometh on the daily. As a result, I have learned to be flexible. I have become quite comfortable with winging things and in the last couple of years have REALLY just turned into a fly-by-the-seat kinda gal.
There is always uncertainty when doing things this way. But with that uncertainty comes the excitement and satisfaction that you still got everything accomplished as anyone one else would have had to anyway, without losing your marbles because you're off some sort of track or schedule. It's not for the faint of heart, admittedly but it's working for us.
Most "normal" people that exercise regularly have a routine. A set time, day that they go to the gym or head out for a run. I have friends that are 6 am bootcampers, 5 am crossfitters, 4am long distance runners, midmorning yogis, afterwork gymrats, afternoon cycling machines or weekend warriors. I can't seem to fit in, or be able to commit to any of those with any kind of consistency.
A good friend and exercise buddy and I have the hardest times getting our workouts to "gel". There is always something prohibiting us from getting into any kind of routine together, even if for a once a week workout. We don't quit trying though. Our text messages go something like this: Her: "Cycle Monday?" Me:"I think so, let me check" Her, the night before class:"did you sign up?" Me:"oh, shoot I'll do it now, yes I can do it" Her:"they just cancelled the class" Me:"UGH!" or...Me: "run tomorrow?" Her"Yes, I'm in" Me at 4:45am:"Baby is sick, can't" Her:"That's ok, kiddo is sick here too." If this were two people trying to go on a date, it'd be doomed.
So when unexpected "openings" in our schedules occur, we literally jump for joy. President's Day was that kind of gift to us. Gift to workout...at 5am? Ya, for real. It's a gift. Our cycle class cancelled and we scrambled to find an alternative because OH EM GEE, we don't have to worry about getting the kids off to school in the morning! We can't be wasteful of that opportunity! So, off to Rev class we went. Perky front row, that's us! (well, not the perky part) And what do you do at the end of a date that you just don't want to end? You have a nightcap! Right? For us, that meant a 4 mile run immediately after a full body workout/high intensity spin class. I'll call it a proactive training baby brick! (two back to back workouts swim/run swim/bike bike/run)
Well whatever, you gotta get it in when you can. So we pulled a double! And, we got to catch up too! Win, win, win.
On our run, we discussed the very nature of our schedules and how difficult 'fitting' a workout in can be. I equate it as feeling like an old school switchboard operator. I start the week with a list of workouts that HAVE to be done (you know, for that self imposed plan) and I slot them in to my calendar where I find a hole. I may have to send hubby a text here and there to confirm kiddo coverage or get a feel that my absence would not be a nuisance or burden and also make weather adjustments but I start the week with a penciled plan. Then, the inevitable switching occurs.
I had full on operator duties this week with hubby travelling. This is what it (and I) looked like:

Me, every. single day.
Monday DAY 8 - as planned: 1000M swim
Monday switch - Oh hey, holiday! Scrap swim & pull double duty w Rox (Rev & 4mi run), swim tomorrow.
Tuesday DAY 9 - as planned: 1 hour Bike Trainer
Tuesday switch 1 - Aha! Bike trainer day was checked off with spin yesterday so swim in the morning to cover Monday's workout.
Tuesday switch 2 - my alarm went off and hubby turned it off and did NOT wake me. Ah! Swim between soccer practice dropoff and baby pickup.
Tuesday switch 3 - I must be an adrenaline junkie. Soccer practice to gym, 20 min TRAFFIC heavy trip. Had exactly 30 minutes to get 1000M in (and change into dry clothes) before racing to daycare & soccer pickup. Ahh! Only got 900M & was light headed & winded running to the car!
Wednesday DAY 10 - as planned: 4 mile run
Wednesday switch 1 - Run was covered on Monday (yay!) - Run anyway after baby dropoff or Hot Yoga at lunch
Wednesday switch 2 - no run, stay home and wait for appliance repair man - maybe Hot Yoga at lunch or strength training at house while waiting.
Wednesday switch 3 - no lunchtime workout...late to work from 2 hour repair aaaand gotta leave work early to p/u son who's staying late at school for project. Will be home early and weather is gorgeous, so maybe run Sunday's track workout?
Wednesday - sigh. Rest day today. Traffic, tween discipline & study, grocery, dinner & toddler melt down...#hardlyrestful ;)
Thursday DAY 11 - as planned: Rest
Thursday - all caught up, no need to switch Rest day, hooray! but still need Hot Yoga that I missed yesterday, whole body feels tight. Shooting for a lunchtime class. *Update - son forgot lunch and I have to leave early for soccer drop off. #yogamaynothappen **Update - his so called lunch was pathetic! Made him buy lunch, went to Yoga and it was A W E S O M E. Sore all over and it feels so good...and tonight, he will pack a REAL lunch and get up on time to not forget it. ;)
Friday DAY 12 - as planned: 900M drill swim
Friday - half-ish day of work, ride outdoors (for Sat workout) after swim, rain in forecast, may have to get on trainer or join noon spin class
Friday switch - stalked weather all morning and decided to skip swim and go for the ride despite high gusting winds and dropping temps because the weekend rainy forecast looked less promising for a ride. On my way out got an unexpected invite by hubby for a little date time. Cut my ride short but rode hard with a killer headwind. Not quite an hour but 12 hard miles rather than the prescribed easy hour. I'll take it. :)
Saturday DAY 13 - as planned: 1HR easy Bike
Saturday switch - rode yesterday - get a swim in after soccer.
Saturday switch 2 - family day - no swim, gotta pull a double tomorrow.
Sunday DAY 14 - as planned: Track Run 4x800 @5k pace, 400 recovery in between, 2mi at 10k pace (~5mi total)
Sunday switch - track run & 1000m swim I missed & foam roll all the sore muscles.
Yay! Rain threatened all weekend but even got a bike ride trip to the park with babies! Track workout was great but HOT! Sun blaring, balmy and humid...felt like summer! I changed and raced to the gym, my quads were toast and was plain tired but still wanted a good workout so I made my own:
Sure enough, I left the gym in flip flops, shorts and wet hair only to get hit with the windy cold front. Yay, Houston weather! Brrrr. Did some foam rolling during Oscars. I wore my daughter's Sleeping Beauty tiara so I'd fit in. Ha! (Kidding, but I did wear it earlier in the day & forgot about it only to be reminded by a passing jogger while I was loading the kids into the bike trailer "nice tiara"...um. Heehee)
So...did you get all that? I'm not sure if I did but I do know that somehow, it all got checked off. It wasn't pretty but every workout is accounted for and this makes week 2 a success! Check, check and checkity check! I'm wondering if the challenge of getting it all done is my driver. Something to ponder...also, just as a behind the curtain tidbit: I wrote this post on Sunday night (2/15) and have edited the "switches" daily so it's ready to post on Monday (2/23). There would be no other way for me to remember the details of this craziness!
So tell me, do you follow a routine or are you more on the wing-it regimen like me? What drives you to get 'er done? Tell me in the comments below, I'd love to hear from ya!
Valerie
P.S - I think I hit most of my goals for the week I posted here. I've got my HR zones ready for the next training run/ride that requires it, signed up for a small tri (and am contemplating a couple others), got all my workouts in plus yoga and a foam roll. I am short a foam roll session but after this week, I plan on 10-15 minutes per night!

Dabbling
You've got to start somewhere but if you're doing it unofficially, somewhere is everywhere. A training plan and coach would be the optimal thing but since I'm not committed, the expense for those is unwarranted.
I feel like I need to have a solid fitness base prior to pursuing these goals (officially) so I've gathered a few free plans that I've found on the interwebs and created my own. I know the gist of how many weekly hours I need to be logging and I also know that with a long term commitment, er...thought in mind, I have plenty of wiggle room.
I started such a plan this week. I haven't really mentioned it at home other than to say "I need to get an hour and half on the bike today". No one has questioned the "need" part of the statement yet so I'm just rolling with it and assuming they think I'm just being neurotic about my workout plan. You know, me just being me. :)
As expected, there are a lot of events that occur in my day-to-day that make such a plan vulnerable to failure. Work commitments, hubby's business and schedule as well as the overall health in a family of 6. Odds are, someone is sick at some point that will trickle a domino effect. It can be a total nightmare but luckily we are healthy more often than and these things tend to be a rare occurrence (once a year, maybe two). Ofcourse, that would happen to have been the entire month of December, a week in January and another in February (yours truly). The rest of 2015 will hopefully be golden.
In normal stubborn fashion, I had set out to start this plan last week because it was following back to to back weekends of travel week and birthday parties. The very week that also coincides with me coming off of a sinus infection & severe head and chest congestion. Good a time as ever, right? After all, I nursed a stress fracture all through the holidays (8 weeks NO running!) and I missed participating in the Houston Half Marathon that I had been training for because of it. So, no sinus infection is going to stand in my way now (stubborn was the key word earlier...).
So here's the round up of week 1 of ? of the made up, self imposed plan for the goal I've yet to commit to. Pretty solid dontcha think? Humor me.
Day 1 5 mile run (still coming back from injury so taking it way easy ie slowish, felt great despite being sick, until I stopped...hack attack)
Day 2 1000Mswim (50s 50k 50p x3) (100p 100k x2) 150s (easy drills, hard to breath w chest cong)
Day 3 1:15 16-17 miles trainer (struggled with getting sensors to work only to discover baby had pulled it off the bike! Half an hour into workout, paused for mommy duties and came back to the same struggle. Little bugger snuck in there and pulled if off again! Lost my distance data from the first session so started over. Good climbs and sprints. Solid workout! (bonus:watched some TV too!)
Day 4 rest
Day 5 950M Swim - squeezed in a super quick workout between early Vday day date with hubby and getting babies from daycare...more drills, used fins this time too. Breathing is tough still, so not trying to measure anything...though I did peek at my 50M times at about :45...I'll have something to compare when lungs are at 100%
Day 6 1:30 Bike 22 miles outdoors - testing my revived Garmin 305. (My frustration with said equipment peaked in late 2012 & I kicked it to the curb then. I've found a way to charge it & have it function for an entire workout successfully, mainly to save the expense of buying a new Bluetooth HRM or even a more expensive, up to date, gadgety GPS watch. Not quite prepared to commit to that, but want to train in HR Zones) It worked great but transferring data is still fidgety.
Day 7 45 min track run (5 miles) - this was supposed to be a low HR Zone workout, 5 minutes at one zone, 1 min at at lower one for several repetitions. It was a frustrating mess. Staying within "Zone 3" felt impossible...I kept thinking, why bother, this is like walking! I tried it for 4 reps and ditched the idea and just went full out Zone 5 all the way home. Found out at home later, that the zones on the watch/app where preset rather than based on personal calculation. Ahh! No wonder! Epic Fail, but I got the miles in.
Goals this up coming week:
- Figure out what MY heart rate zones are and set them.
- Follow & try to stick to the self imposed plan (6 workouts) with the added juggle of hubby going out of town for the week.
- Try to add a session of Hot Yoga & at least 2 foam roll sessions for achy muscles. Everything is feeling a bit tight.
- Look at race schedule and choose a sprint to SIGN UP for.
I found this and thought how fitting it is that I am working my way up this sequence backwards. Plenty of action this past week!

A new era has begun.
Or not. After years of spot work outs with Tony (Horton, from P90X, we are on a first name basis) my hubby and I have decided to mix it up and include Shaun T in our lives. We borrowed an Insanity video recently that included the "Fit Test". After watching from the couch in its entirety first (because "Insanity" is admittedly a scary term), we jumped in and did the test. I was mighty proud of myself for getting the amount of reps that I did for some of those exercises! My biggest concern was the cramping that occurs in my feet when I do that level of jumping in most cardio exercises but I managed to make it through the fit test relatively unscathed. (I dealt with the cramps i.e. sucked it up).
We (meaning, HE) decided to do some research on some other Shaun T workout programs and came upon Focus T 25. It's also by Beachbody and it's a shorter version of Insanity. Lesser time per workout, 5 days a week rather than 6 but NO breaks between exercises. We like the idea of a shorter work out with the same intensity which is also what P90X3, who just came out to market, is touting. He compared the two programs and was leaning towards T25. The foot cramp thing made me uneasy so I leaned the other way to P90X3 and because it also has a variety of workouts that I enjoy like Yoga, Pilates and some circuit weight training. I seemed to have swayed him. He pulled the trigger on P90X3 but somehow inadvertently, T25 showed up on our doorstep at the same time that he completed his order. Whoopsie! I guess during his initial research, he got trigger happy! Ha! Rather than return it we decided to keep it and give it a go since it was IN. MY. HANDS!
Monday (yesterday) was our first day. My two biggest concerns were the foot cramps I mentioned and the other was whether 25 minutes would seem like a full workout. When I got home, my hubby had just completed it. He was dripping in sweat (but alive) so I quickly changed and took my turn. My initial thoughts:
OW, MY FEET! Ugh. I pushed and got it done but honestly, nothing, not my quads, calves or heart for that matter felt the pain like my feet did. I'll have a separate post on this because upon googling late last night, I found it's a common issue and I am determined to figure this thing out.
After the heat in my feet subsided I felt like I could go for a run. It went by very quick and like an intense warm up. I'm thinking that they start you off "easy" so they can give you a one, two sucker punch later in the week to make you take back anything you ever said about the first couple of days. (so I'll tread lightly...:) )
It felt good to have so much extra time in the evening to work on yoga stretches and the challenge I'm currently working on (of course I am). I also like that Shaun T is no nonsense. He just cuts to the chase and before you know it you are jumping around the room with sweat dripping from your nose. There is a short cool down after the 25 minute workout is complete to help stretch out those big muscles but that is not included within the workout time so you get a SOLID 25 minutes of GO.
Today, Houston is in the middle of a "Snowpocalypse", meaning the whole city shuts down with the smallest threat of snow or ice on the roads. Schools are closed and work is on a "if you have to come in" basis. So, I figured I'd get day 2 out of the way while hubby and I swapped half days for work. I did "Speed 1.0" and I went for it barefooted. Seemed crazy but surprisingly, much less cramping. The jump squat landings were a bit hard on my feet but I sucked it up as best I could.
Again, before you can even want a sip of water, it's over. The last 7 minutes were the hardest only because the baby who was watching me from the bouncer and had been laughing at my antics the whole time, was getting tired. I had to add extra acrobatics to keep him entertained through to the end.
I should mention that my legs were sore when I woke up this morning so last night's workout was effective. And now, a few hours after day 2's workout, my legs feel pretty solid. THIS is a step in the right direction!
My take away so far is that I have got to find a solution for the foot arch cramp issue. Until then, I will continue to push through as long as I can. At the very least until the next shipment arrives on my doorstep! Stay tuned for a follow up review at the end of week 1.
Happy Snow Day all...stay warm!

So where are we with this thing?
This thing we call a baby fitness blog, you mean? Oh yea. That.
I admit, I have been a total slacker (in more ways than one). This blog has fallen so far back on the burner that it's not even in the kitchen. Wha?
I have been exercising, which if you follow me on Instagram or Twitter --->, you know of my progress. I just have failed miserably to sit a write about it. Baby #4 is now 15 weeks old and a pure joy in our lives. He is so happy all of the time and flashes a smile so easily that I spend most of my time around him in an utter state of goo and gah. Not even kidding about that.
Along with all my other "plans" for 2014, I do intend to keep this space updated with routines, workouts and may incorporate reviews on exercise gear, local "boutique" gym classes and share some of my smoothie recipes that have been a hit (not the beet one...ha!).
Stay tuned and hope you'll come visit and join me in my journey on remaining "Baby Fit".
